Learning Together
Many of us love the informality of our simple cooperative ventures and the garden co-op is no exception. Operating on the honor system, the theme is: work a lot, help yourself to a lot. Work a little, take a little. So far this has worked out well. Many of us had little gardening experience when we began our community garden, but that has certainly changed over the years. Possibly the most challenging education was in changing our lifestyles to eat seasonally available food. It seems we have learned that lesson well, however, because these days our 400 plant asparagus bed is normally picked clean!
Mulching
Because we mulch the garden space year round, we rarely have a need to turn the soil. The mulch suppresses weed growth, keeps us out of the mud in spring, retains moisture in summer, and provides an ideal environment for the earthworms that aerate and fertilize the soil. By using season extending 'water teepees' we can begin gardening in March. We grow everything organically and generally plant a diverse mix of crops to offset any crop failures.
Abundance.
Before we began our garden it would have been hard for us to imagine it, but now we usually have all the asparagus, rhubarb, beans, carrots, beets, cabbage, broccoli, garlic, onions, and tomatoes we can possibly eat and even preserve sometimes. What a wonderful problem to have…. and all organic!
Join us for one of our informal gardening weekends this year… and bring the kids.
