Our Stelle Community Cooperatives
Our co-ops rely on the honor system. If we need a little money to accomplish something, we pass the hat. If someone uses something, they put it away. If somebody uses more of something than the others they contribute more. Do we have problems sometimes with people keeping their word or holding up their end of the bargain? Sure we do, but as we have learned to deal more honestly, directly and considerately with each other, the problems become fewer and fewer.
Many of our co-ops are informal, so guess what? – there's almost no paperwork. Other co-ops have minimal structure. Other than reminder notes, schedules or sign-up sheets, activity relies on verbal agreements and maybe even a hand shake. Since none of us are fond of paperwork, this structure allows us to focus our efforts on keeping the co-ops operating on a current ‘what's needed' basis rather than dealing with unnecessary or outdated rules or agreements.
Because the co-ops are relatively small (6-12 households), issues needing attention can often be dealt with over the phone, by email or at an impromptu meeting.
We've learned that the benefits of cooperating far outweigh the negatives. When the benefits outweigh the negatives - that is sustainable... and the real reason our cooperatives continue, even during their quiet times.
We offer occasional workshops exploring the ins and outs of how our cooperatives work. If this interests you send us an email so we can add you to our ‘e-news' list or check our Calendar of Events for newly added workshops and seminars.
