Introducing David Blume

Dave Blume

Author, biofuel expert, and permaculturist David Blume has studied, implemented and taught permaculture principles for nearly three decades in the U.S., Latin America, and Africa. His passion for, and natural resonance with, the wisdom embodied within the principles of permaculture has led him to provide innovative training as well as ecosystem specific design to thousands of individuals wishing to learn of and apply this practical, provoking body of knowledge. By applying these principles David was able to place his two acre farm in Woodside into the top 15% of California’s organic farms on a gross receipts basis for nearly ten years. David is an ecological biologist who first began teaching others to produce and use alcohol in the late 1970s, while working at Mother Earth News Eco Village and Research Center.

David’s passion for permaculture is matched only by his passion to create renewable fuels using methods rooted in permaculture principles. His extensive studies and experimentation with ethanol production resulted in training over 7500 individuals on how to make their own ethanol. Culminating nearly three decades of research, experimentation, and educating, David has recently published Alcohol Can Be A Gas! Fueling an Ethanol Revolution for the 21st Century, the first truly comprehensive manual of farm scale alcohol production and use ever written that clearly illustrates the path to a renewable, plentiful, and environmentally recuperative liquid fuel supply.

David is a seasoned presenter who has appeared more than 1000 times in radio, television and print media on alcohol fuel and permaculture. He ran his first tractor on Biodiesel and his trucks on alcohol in 1979. In 1983 he wrote and hosted the 10-part PBS series Alcohol As Fuel. To find out more...
