Embracing Sustainability…
Making the commitment to grow and to change
Many of us involved with CSC have realized that to create a truly sustainable world where people and planet are cared for equally, a shift must occur in our thinking - a shift driven by an awakening of our hearts. Fortunately, millions are awakening to the reality that we can create a world guided by love and grounded in heart-based wisdom. (Read "The Cultural Creatives" by Ray & Anderson)
Regardless of what is causing this awakening, its occurrence is becoming increasingly apparent. By the tens of thousands we are beginning to walk away from mass consumerism. We are walking away from chemical farming, unfulfilling work, shallow relationships, and meaningless lives. Everything we are leaving behind represents aspects of our culture that are, in the long run, non-sustainable.
The difficulty for many of us then is deciding what are we to walk towards? We know instinctively what isn't working, but how do we determine what will work?
At Center for Sustainable Community we have learned that the most important answers are not ‘out there'… but rather, ‘in here' – in our own hearts. We have come to understand that the answers to life's mysteries and challenges are within us. We are committed to finding these answers and supporting others in finding their own heart-based answers as well.
What we mean by ‘embracing sustainability' is that each of us will learn to embrace our journey within - to find that inner part we share with everyone else. In that embrace the circle of life finds completion.
If you would like to follow the trail of how many of us came to the above conclusions concerning self and cultural sustainability, we have compiled a list of favorite books that nurtured us along the path.
