Community Living Weekend

September 18-19, 2004

Cider making during the community living weekend.

Twelve visitors joined us for this weekend of relaxed activities - six adults and six children. We made lots of apple cider that we enjoyed throughout the weekend, and there was plenty left over for our guests to take home and enjoy. We extracted honey, during which Mark gave a short introduction to beekeeping. Interspersed throughout the weekend were many opportunities to talk about what is important to us, and what we would like to change in the world and in our lives. The children enjoyed the campfire and the s'mores, as well as the chance to explore nature for a day.

Guest comments:

"The boys enjoyed the campfire and s'mores and at sunrise went out to re-stoke the embers. One of the children exclaimed, "I'm going to have s'mores for breakfast!" Meanwhile, the mom's enjoyed the evening discussion circle. Breakfast with the sun at my back and the rustle of the honeylocusts along with Guia's beautiful laughter and Mark's friendly talk make me feel like a welcome friend. Thanks for the works!

Thank you so much for the great food and conversation! I feel like there is something magical and familiar about this place and the people here. Thank you for sharing that with me! Namaste! and thanks,
- Sarah (Indianapolis, IN)

What follows is the original announcement for this weekend activity.

Hammock at the B&B

On occasion we set aside a weekend for folks who would like to spend more time exploring Center for Sustainable Community than is available during our monthly open house. Our Community Living Weekend gives all involved an opportunity to explore what is at the heart of sustainable community living and to share their thoughts and feelings on how to foster genuine, authentic community interaction.

The weekend is intentionally designed with little structure so there is time to relax, get to know one another, and enjoy meals together. This is because we have found that visitors generally wish to share what is going on in their lives as well as find out about us. The weekend events are primarily held at Guia and Mark Hoffman's Greenhouse Bed and Breakfast just two miles from Stelle and runs officially from 10:00 a.m. Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  A Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday brunch are included. All meals and lodging occur in the B&B, and much of the ingredients will come from the organic garden at the B&B as well as from the Stelle community garden.

Saturday morning (10:30 to 12:30) we have introductions, then take some time to review Center for Sustainable Community and its relationship to the Stelle community.

Cider making

On Saturday afternoon, everyone is invited to make apple cider using the 1860's vintage cider press in Stelle with apples from the community orchard. This is a favorite activity of young and old, and you get to take home some homemade cider too! The afternoon's activities can include a walking tour of Stelle for those interested.

Saturday evening
we will host a gathering to explore "What is at the heart of sustainable community", and "How we might achieve sustainability in our lives", with plenty of opportunity for sharing. This will also be a good time to ask any deeper questions you might wish to explore.   After that, and weather permitting, we might enjoy any or all of the following: an evening walk, a campfire with marshmallow roasting, play the Guidance Game (a CSC favorite), and/or star gazing.

Sunday morning is open for walks, meditation, QiGong, yoga, and the like… followed by a fabulous brunch. After brunch there will be more opportunity for casual visiting or you may choose simply to enjoy the gardens and pond at the bed and breakfast.

Price includes three meals, all weekend events, and lodging. Camping is also available (bring your own gear). Children are welcome – call for pro-rated prices based on age.  Space is limited so contact us early. Email mark@greenhousebed.com or call 815-253-9020 for more information. The Bed and Breakfast will be available for Friday evening arrivals. Call in advance to reserve a Friday room.
