10:00 a.m. - Open House and Tours
Noon - Lunch
1:30 p.m. – Seminar: Introduction to Peak Oil - and what we can do about it
If gas went up to $10/gallon how would that change the way we live? What about $20? We will look at some of the reasons why many feel that this will soon happen in the U.S. and what are some of the best things we can do to prepare for it – growing our own food being one of the most important.
These two films were very will received at the Lunch, Movie and Conversation gathering we co-hosted in February at Sweet Dreams Café and Bakery in Glenview, so we wanted to show them again, this time here in Stelle, for those who missed them. These are two of our favorite short films:
The Living Land
Over many years, our methods of growing food have become ever more mechanized and complex. At the same time, we've lost millions of acres of good soil to pollution, erosion, and an ever-growing population. But there is a new awareness of the need to change our perceptions about how we grow our food and how we treat the land. Four individuals on the frontier of this effort—John Jeavons, Wes Jackson, restaurateur Alice Waters, and organic farmer Mas Masumoto—share their insights in this moving video narrated by Peter Coyote. (27 minutes)
Ruth Stout's Garden
This is a lively film journey into the life of a woman who, from a perspective of more than ninety years, has a great deal to offer young and old. Ruth talks on subjects from aging and child-rearing to her "no dig/no work" method as she makes her way through her garden. (23 Minutes)
Join us for lively conversation while we look at the ‘why’ and ‘hows’ of living a little more lightly on our planet. Afternoon session begins following lunch (about 1:00) and will wrap up about 3:00.
There is a suggested donation of $10-$20 for the tour, lunch and seminar.
