Aquaponics is the combination of growing fish (aquaculture) and herbs and vegetables in water (hydroponics) in the same water system.
AquaRanch specializes in fresh naturally grown tilapia fish and organic certified fresh grown herbs and vegetables all grown under one greenhouse roof. AquaRanch starts with potable water and grows all the fish indoors in a controlled environment. As a note; the fish are called naturally grown because the USDA currently has no designation for organic certification of fish.

Owner/operator and our tour guide for the afternoon, Myles Harston, has been fine tuning his successful system for over 24 years. AquaRanch sells wholesale to grocery stores and through farmer's markets and Community Supported Agriculture, (CSA)’s.
The tour will begin with a look at his breeding stock tanks and then will proceed to the first half of the greenhouse, which is filled with tilapia tanks and then follow the water lines to the other half that contains the hydroponic produce and herbs.

Bio: Myles Harston
Myles Harston has had a life long interest in raising fish. In his early childhood he was an avid tropical fish enthusiast. In 1985 he started making aquaculture system components. He built smaller systems for educational institutions and hobbyists as well as larger systems for universities and commercial purposes. He has worked with several universities to help them develop designs for their aquaculture programs. In 1992 he started experimenting with aquaponics, which is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics using the same body of water in a symbiotic relationship. He has worked with a variety of techniques for producing vegetables using the aquaculture water. Using aquaculture water to grow vegetables is very different that using hydroponic nutrient solutions, therefore many of the growing techniques are also different. Myles is the founder of AquaRanch where they raise an all natural tilapia with no exposure to heavy metals, hormone manipulation or farm runoff. AquaRanch also produces organic certified produce and herbs. AquaRanch also produces a Sweet Basil Vinaigrette dressing/marinade which is one of their hottest items at farmers markets.
