Our Open House introduces you to Stelle, painting a picture of its history, current function and interaction, and its future. We take you on a walking tour that explains some of the practiced examples of sustainable living in our community. After lunch, a presenter is brought in to teach a pre-selected topic.
School Field Trips and Large-Group Tours
Over the years we have hosted many groups requesting a visit to Stelle. Tour groups have ranged from college students and their instructors, who seek fresh insights into sustainable living, to local public-school children who romp through our orchards and gardens in the fall and get hands-on experience making their own apple cider using an old-time cider press. On Saturday, October 22nd, the Kankakee Area Stargazers set up in our crescent park with all their telescopes and treated us to a tour of our prairie night skies. We had sent notices to local teachers and homeschool groups, and we also were joined by our neighbors interested in stargazing. The evening began indoors with a short introductory talk about astronomy by Drew Horn. As the stargazers set up their equipment, we fortified ourselves with brats, chili, oatmeal cookies and hot cider. When the evening set in, we were treated to a tour of the darkening skies with laser pointers helping to pick out the constellations and planets. The skies had a light cloud cover initially, but later, when they cleared, we were able to see dramatic shooting stars, (it was the peak of the Orionid Meteor Shower) and the lovely moons of Jupiter.
